Publication Expectations
It is rather frustrating to have to spell this out explicitly, but
unfortunately too many graduate students do not seem to know this: you
are expected to publish as part of your degree. It may not be a
formal requirement, but I am not supervising your degree and paying
your salary for your benefit alone. The bare minimum I expect is one
top-tier conference paper for a masters student, and three such and a
journal for a Ph.D. student. Note that these are bare minimums, and a
reasonable output is closer to two papers per year, which for a
masters would mean one-to-two papers, and for a PhD would mean around
six-to-ten papers. Most, though unfortunately not all, of my graduate
students have no difficulty whatsoever with this requirement.
